The Chaplet of Divine Mercy Explained
The Divine Mercy Chaplet is a prayer that focuses on the mercy of Jesus. It was given to Saint Faustina Kowalska in the 1930s through a series of visions she received of Jesus, where He expressed His desire for this particular chaplet to be prayed as a means for souls to understand and receive His merciful love. The prayer is recited using a standard set of rosary beads and consists of a series of prayers given to St. Faustina by Jesus Himself.
On the larger beads, the prayer recited is, "Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world." On the smaller beads, it is, "For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world." The chaplet concludes with a closing doxology repeated three times: "Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world."
The Divine Mercy Chaplet is traditionally prayed at 3 PM, the hour of Christ’s death, but it can be prayed at any time. It’s particularly associated with the Divine Mercy devotion, culminating in the celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday, the Sunday after Easter. Praying this chaplet is an invitation to reflect on the depth of God’s mercy and to seek that mercy both for ourselves and for the world.
